AREA board member becomes honorary citizen of Reggio Emilia
The Africa Reggio Emilia Alliance is thrilled to announce that one of our board members, Maurizio Mariano, together with Samora Machel Jnr, has been awarded the honour of citizenship of Reggio Emilia. Read the official statement from the City Council of Reggio Emilia.

History in the making as we launched the groundbreaking isiZulu and Sesotho translations of our wonderful resource guide Reimagine Education: Reggio Emilia inspiration in Africa on 28 October 2021! The Italian Club buzzed with excitement and happy ululation as Board member Thandi Chaane paid tribute to translators and editors and the Premier of Gauteng, Mr David Makhura shared that the Reggio approach is close to his heart and that he would not have missed the occasion for anything.
Such a wonderful event to celebrate a milestone achievement. Special thanks to Premier David Makhura, the Board of the Africa Reggio Emilia Alliance, Des Hugo, translators, editors, AREA team, family and friends.

2018 highlights

How can ECD centres embrace the Reggio Emilia approach?
Marina Castagnetti – who many of you might remember as the keynote speaker at our 2017 conference – was out in South Africa again from 23-25 October 2018, this time as part of the Italian delegation visiting South Africa for the SA-Italy Summit, and the annual celebration of Oliver Tambo’s life. She was one of the keynote speakers during an ECD seminar that took place during this summit, and suggested ways local ECD centres can embrace the Reggio Emilia approach.Reimagine education: Reggio Emilia inspiration in Africa
The Africa Reggio Emilia Alliance is proud to have published its first booklet on the Reggio Emilia approach and the ways in which it inspires teaching and learning. AREA board member awarded Italian Order of Knighthood
AREA is very proud of board member Maurizio Mariano, who was awarded the Commendatore Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana (Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, Third Class, Commander) on Friday 1 June 2018 at the Italian consulate in Johannesburg. Maurizio is the first non-resident Italian to be honoured with this Order of Knighthood in South Africa. Read more…
Curiosity, creativity, discovery – the 2017 conference

Nearly 300 educators gathered in Johannesburg in June 2017 with a sense of common purpose: to deepen their understanding of the Reggio Emilia philosophy of education; to connect with other Reggio-inspired thinkers, activists and educators; and to meditate on what we can do to ensure a better future for children.
