“The wider the range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences.” – Loris Malaguzzi quoted in The Hundred Languages of Children, ch. 3, by Carolyn Edwards (1993)
Why AREA?
The Africa Reggio Emilia Alliance is the official reference point for the Reggio approach in Africa – as appointed by Reggio Children. Our role is to facilitate the communication of information between Reggio Children and those interested in the Reggio approach in South Africa, including our members and the general public.
Why do you have members?
We’re a non-profit company primarily funded by donors and grown through the work of volunteers. You can support our work by becoming a member and helping nurture a Reggio-inspired community of educators in South Africa. As Amelia Gambetti of Reggio Children reminds us, “Our job is too difficult and too beautiful to do alone.”
How much does annual membership cost?
We try to keep membership as affordable and accessible as possible. For this reason, our rates are tiered, and significant concessions are available. Membership can cost as little as R185 a year for sponsored individuals and students, while independent schools with more than 20 members of staff pay R2 330 a year.
What are the benefits?
AREA members are the first to hear about opportunities for professional development (like conferences, study tours, workshops and collaborative projects) and receive preferential booking and reduced rates. Other benefits include telephonic advice, mentorship, and access to AREA newsletters, reports and publications – as well as a community of Reggio-inspired educators and activists in South Africa.
How do I become a member?
It’s simple. Download the 2025 membership form, fill out your details, and submit the completed form plus proof of payment to admin@reggio.co.za.
